Intro Courses
Time: Flexible Facilitator: TBD upperclassmen or staff Co-Req: InterVarsity Small Group
An introduction to walking with Jesus at UT. Using images from Scripture, this course covers things like the true gospel, meeting with God daily, prayer, sharing our faith, and trusting God with our academics.
Group Investigating God -- Peace Times: Flexible Facilitator: TBD Are you curious about Jesus but wouldn't describe yourself as "Christian"? Come explore with a few other students how the teaching and life of Jesus address the stresses and anxieties that seem indigenous to our lives as students. Instead of hearing what the "experts" say about Jesus, we'll turn directly to the pages of the gospels and let him speak for himself. Consider for yourself Jesus and his offer of peace. Spring Electives
Commissioned
Time: TBD (Most likely Friday afternoon)
Facilitator: Andrea As followers of Jesus we are called to reach the ends of the earth. The hope for this group is to learn what Scripture has to say about missions and how we are called to go. We will be also looking at the issues in our world today and spending time in prayer and seeking out practical ways that we can live out this call while students at UT. Diakonos - dē-ä'-ko-nos Time: TBD
Facilitator: Chris -An attendant, waiter, servant. The name of those who wait at a table, like the attendants and servants of a king. Spoken of the early leaders of the church, especially the overseers of the poor and sick. These days service is equated with the cultural term: “Community service” where we go to get our required hours for the different organizations we're a part of, and the term has lost its true meaning in our lives. Why is it that the early church leaders were termed servants rather than given titles of authority? Why did Jesus wash his disciples feet instead of the other way around? Why was the term Diakonos (Deacon) given especially to the overseers of the poor and sick? Come join us as we try to better understand the original, biblical meaning of service and how God longs to achieve his justice on earth through the hands and feet of humble servants at work in urban ministry, global missions, leadership roles, and countless other places.Hard Questions
Time: TDB
Facilitator: Joel
Why do Christians still sin? Why do I feel enslaved to a particular sin? What happens if believers keep sinning and don’t repent? What is the relationship between faith and works in our walk? Is it possible to mess up so bad that God doesn’t want me anymore? A lot of questions like these are floating around today about the relationship between believers and sin. The focus of this group is looking at what the Bible has to say about it. Each week we will dig into core passages like: Rom 6-8, Matt 4, Matt 26, Psalm 103, James 2, James 4, 1 Pet 5, 2 Pet 1. The last part of the group will be devoted to looking over difficult to interpret passages like: Heb 6, Heb 10, James 2, and providing freedom to ask hard questions. Our goal is not to force an opinion on these issues, or to ignore them, but just to really study the passages themselves and see what God is trying to say to us.
